Separation Anxiety - Why It Occurs And How To Stop It

If you have children, you may have already experienced separation anxiety. Separation anxiety is a common problem for children between the ages of 8 months and 1 year. Separation anxiety is characterized by a child starting to cry or even becoming hysterical when their parent leaves them with someone else.

Separation anxiety can be induced by the departure of one specific person, or the child may get attached to a different person every week, always choosing somebody new from whom they fear separation.

Separation anxiety can be just as upsetting and frustrating to parents as it is to the child. Nothing can be more disconcerting and exhausting than having to be constantly within sight of your child, or risk him becoming distraught should you leave him for any period of time.

Often a child who suffers from separation anxiety may actually need to be constantly in physical contact with you. This can often make it difficult to do even the most mundane of tasks. So it can impact your ability to do the cooking, cleaning, and go about your daily business. If you have to work each day then leaving for work can be difficult. Even if you need some downtime for yourself after work, you may have a nightmare of tantrums.

It may be consoling to parents who are worried about separation anxiety in their children to understand that it is not a result of parenting that is too protective or too lax, or excessively tough or easy. It is a simply a normal part of growing up that all children have to go through. Indeed, some children feel separation anxiety far more than others and it may not even be an issue with some kids.

Set aside a defined period of time every day to work on your child’s separation anxiety, for example right after dinner, and let your child know that you are leaving, but will return shortly. Then follow through. Go outside and walk a few blocks or just go somewhere where you can’t be seen from the window. Wait five minutes before re-entering the house, and then make your presence known. Ignore any tantrum that probably began before you ever left. Take a seat and relax, waiting for your child to come to you. When she does, act as if nothing out of the ordinary happened and continue as normal. If you repeat this consistently, your child will become reassured that you will return, and will stop being so nervous when you leave, eventually reducing the separation anxiety.

Following the same routine over and over may help the child who is experiencing separation anxiety. As an example if your child is having a temper tantrum every time you must leave for work, try using the same approach every day and eventually your child will become used to the idea.

Panic Attacks: What Are They, and Why Do They Happen?

Do you believe that panic attacks are life-threatening? You are right. These are harmless episodes triggered by stress and resolve on its own. But medical science has changed its views on panic attacks IF this is frequently experienced. What causes these harrowing attacks? Before knowing the symptoms, you must understand that panic attacks are not a manifestation of a disease but a condition sparked by the body’s reaction to fear and stress.

When a person is confronted with a stressful situation, he may fight or flee. As a consequence, his body reacts to the situation and exhibits symptoms of panic attacks. During a panic attack, the body is flooded with epinephrine or adrenaline and the abnormal levels of the hormone triggers the body’s response to the stress. The experience may be as short as fifteen seconds or as long as thirty minutes. It has not been established yet why women are more prone to panic attacks than men.

What makes panic attacks so disabling is that they are unpredictable, so that they can be experienced anywhere, anytime. People who suffer from them never know when they’re going to experience one. When a panic attack begins, there first may be mounting fear, followed by several symptoms. Panic attacks can occur in stressful situations for anyone occasionally, but if you experience frequent panic attacks, you have panic disorder.

Panic disorder earned from but relevant to the condition of panic attacks. You experience the same symptoms, which can be very immobilizing. You may have, for example, feelings of terror or dread, racing heart, shortness of breath, excessive sweating, dizziness, nausea, shakiness or trembling, abdominal upset, numbness or tingling sensations, choking sensations, and a feeling that you might die or at least lose control.

The exact cause of panic attacks is yet unknown, but they occur because your mind and body react to intense fear, and again, while this is a normal reaction in a truly dangerous situation, it’s not when panic attacks occur. It may be as a result of genetic malfunction. For example, panic disorder is more likely if family members have had episodes of panic attacks or have had depression. In addition to genetic components, panic attacks may be also caused by stress and medication.

Stress can trigger a panic attack. For example, if a loved one very close to you has recently died and you are dealing with separation or grief, the anxiety brought upon by these very stressful situations can make you vulnerable to panic attacks. You may not know you’re having a panic attack when the fear first escalates to the level that you feel like you’re going to lose control. A hallmark of panic attacks is that the body reacts to the fear as though there is a very dangerous situation at hand, when in fact there is not.

If you suffer from severe panic attacks, most likely both your mind and body are reacting to fear. For example, if you already are under severe stress or if you suffer from depression, your body can have panic attack reactions, which exacerbates your mental fear, which further provokes physical symptoms, and so on. Panic attacks themselves can become a vicious cycle. It may become so bad, sadly, that thinking of having a panic attack can in fact actually cause one. Your mind first registers fear, then your body responds.

If you have had panic attack symptoms very frequently, see a doctor. First of all, you should rule out any physical disorders that could be actually causing the panic attacks. If none are found, medications can help control the panic attacks, and you may also seek counseling and therapy. These sessions can help you understand your fears, while a trained therapist can also expose you to them so that you must face them and ultimately get them back under control.

Stop Anxiety Today With One Of These Simple Techniques

A person that has an anxiety disorder wants nothing more than to find a solution to stop anxiety for good. While there are many techniques out there to help stop anxiety, only you can figure out what will be the most effective for you.

The first point to be aware of is that doctors do not usually prescribe medicines for stopping anxiety as a first step. There are many other options available to stop anxiety that doctors prefer to try initially. And in case you are not very keen on taking medicines you should inform your doctor about your preferences.

There are cognitive and behavioral therapies that can assist you to stop anxiety. Behavioral therapy uses techniques like deep breathing and teaches the patient way to relax as a way to eliminate physical symptoms of anxiety (for example, rapid breathing or a racing heartbeat). Cognitive therapy helps the patient to recognize the kind of thinking and thought patterns that leads to the types of thoughts that cause anxiety and helps both to create new thought patterns and correct the old ones.

Severe anxiety can be a life limiting problem, so the sooner you can use techniques that are proven to stop anxiety the better. Some options include hypnotherapy to help ease subconscious pain or worry. Other people visit an acupuncturist and find that this ancient treatment of various pressure points help to relieve tension in the nervous system. Massage therapy is also a popular option for those with severe stress and tension.

One option that may help stop anxiety is exercise. Yoga and tai chi are good choices or even just stretching or walking can be beneficial. If you would prefer not to join a group, you can do this on your own with the help of a DVD to teach you what you need to do.

Your anxiety may also be a result of food intolerances. Food intolerances are often ignored when designing a treatment plan to stop anxiety, but it is not unusual for someone who finds they have an intolerance to certain foods notice that their anxiety symptoms are ameliorated by removing that food from their diet. A food intolerance is not the same as an actual food allergy, which is why an intolerance will not be detected if testing for an allergy. If this is a problem for you, you should consider asking your doctor to recommend a nutritionist. A nutritionist will gladly help you set up a food diary as part of an elimination process and help you find out which foods may be increasing your anxiety.

You can discuss the many medication choices available with your doctor. Once your doctor knows your symptoms and health history along with your unique considerations, he or she can talk to you about the positive and negative aspects of each medication to stop anxiety.
